Tavistock wins U16 Canadian Championship with perfect 11-0 record
Submitted By Chad Blum on Wednesday, August 8, 2018
The Tavistock Athletics captured the 2018 U16 Boys’ Canadian Fast Pitch Championship in dramatic fashion on Sunday, defeating the Host team from Innerkip 2-1 in 13 innings in the gold medal game.  Jackson Pegelo singled home Carter Roth with one out in the bottom of the 13th to end the longest final game in the U16 tournament’s history, which took 3 hours to complete.

Nine teams from Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland competed over the course of the five day tournament, with Tavistock going 8-0 through round robin play.  The highlight of the round robin was Friday night’s matchup for first place between the host team from Innerkip and the Athletics, which both came into the game with identical 7-0 records.  Tavistock won the game 7-2, with close to 1500 fans filling the Innerkip park.

In the first playoff game pitting the number 1 and 4 seeds, Tavistock defeated Nova Scotia 3-1 in a tight, well played game.  Caley Whiteye and Chad Brown combined for the win, with Tavistock continuing a strong week of timely hitting, great pitching and solid defensive play.  This advanced the boys to the undefeated game, and a rematch of Friday night’s final round robin game against Innerkip.  In the undefeated game, Brown threw a gem in leading Tavistock to a 9-2 victory, allowing them to advance directly to Sunday’s gold medal game.

Innerkip defeated bronze medal winning Napanee early Sunday afternoon to reach the final and set up a third game between the two teams in three days.  Innerkip took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, with Tavistock eventually being able to even the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth.  The Athletics had several line drive hits that would have ended the game, only to see great catches by Innerkip’s defense to push the game further into extra innings.

Carter Roth was named the tournament’s top batter and all-star catcher, while Reese Yantzi earned all-star pitcher.  Yantzi threw all 13 innings in the final to earn the win, with Innerkip’s Andrew Van Boekel also pitching the entire game while earning playoff MVP.

A special thanks to the Innerkip host committee, countless volunteers, and diamond/park crew who made this Championship possible on immaculate fields.  From the Tuesday night banquet through to the closing ceremonies, the event was first class and set the bar extremely high for future hosts
